The Dutch 🇳🇱 language has 15 different vowel sounds: aa, a, ee, e, ie, i, oo, o, uu, u, eu, oe, ui, au/ou, ij/ei. In written Dutch 🇳🇱 we use only 5 letters to express these 15 different sounds: a, e, i, o, u. * AU and OU sound the same, EI and IJ also sound the same. Dutch people also have to memorize when to write AU or OU and when to write EI or IJ.
* And 'y' for words that we 'borrowed' from English e.g. 'baby'.
